ColegauCymru has reaffirmed its commitment to international collaboration after attending a high-level European networking event in Brussels focused on building new partnerships ahead of the UK's return to the Erasmus+ programme.

Project Officer Vicky Thomas represented ColegauCymru at the New Partnerships with UK in Erasmus+ event, which brought together education providers, government representatives and sector organisations from across the UK and Europe to explore future opportunities for collaboration from 2027 onwards.

Held at the Office of the Northern Ireland Executive in Brussels, the event featured contributions from representatives of the British Council, European Commission, Welsh Government, higher education institutions and vocational education providers. Discussions focused on the UK's re-entry to Erasmus+, partnership development and preparations for the programme's return.

The visit provided valuable opportunities to ensure the interests of Wales' further education sector were represented in wider UK and European discussions, including dedicated breakout sessions for further education and vocational education and training (FE/VET), schools, sport and higher education.

During the visit, Vicky took part in:

  • Discussions with peers from across the UK and European partner organisations about the opportunities presented by the UK's return to the Erasmus+ programme.

  • A networking reception at the British Embassy, where she met potential partners across a wide range of curriculum areas and exploring future collaboration opportunities for Welsh colleges.

The visit builds on ColegauCymru's ongoing work to strengthen international partnerships and maximise opportunities for learners and staff in Wales. Following the recent announcement that the UK will rejoin Erasmus+ from 2027, the organisation is working closely with partners across Wales, the UK and Europe to help colleges prepare for renewed participation in the programme. The return of Erasmus+ will provide new opportunities for learner and staff mobility, international collaboration and professional development across the further education sector.

ColegauCymru Project Officer, Vicky Thomas, said,

“The opportunity to reconnect with our European partners marks an exciting new chapter for further education in Wales. As we prepare for the UK's return to Erasmus+, we are building partnerships that will broaden horizons, enrich learning and create lasting opportunities for learners, staff and colleges across Wales."
